Cabled Cozy Hat
The inspiration for the Cabled Cozy Hat came from my neighbor Dusty's hat his grandma knit for him when he was a baby. Over time the hat had stretched out, and he continued to wear it. I liked it because it looked comfortable and non-commital; it did not squeeze tightly around his head. To that end, I have designed the Cabled Cozy Hat to simply sit on your head and keep your ears warm. And it won't flatten your hair.
-Size US 11 16" circular needles
-Cable hook (the larger, the better)
-125 yds of chunky weight yarn to knit singly, or 250 yds dk weight or aran weight yarn to work doubled up. (I used KFI Angora Extra doubled up, which is an angora wool blend.)
-1 Large darning or upholstery needle
Cast on 70 stitches (or any multiple of 10 stitches that will fit around your head. Use a single stand if working with a chunky weight, use a double strand if working with a dk or aran weight.)
Join in the round and work a K1, P1 rib for 5 inches. This forms the ribbed base of the hat, which will be folded over later.
At 5 inches: K4, P2, K2, P2. Repeat this pattern over every 10 stitches. Continue in pattern for two rounds.
1) Cable round: On every K4, do a cable. Pattern for this row is C4F, P2, K2, P2. Repeat this for entire round.
2) K4, P2, K2, P2 for next six rounds.
3) Repeat steps 1 and 2 above until hat measures 12 inches from bottom of K1 P1 rib to top.
4) While still on the needles, cut your knitting from the ball of yarn, leaving about 10 inches of yarn hanging off your work. Using a large upholstery or darning needle threaded with the hanging length of yarn, pick up the stitches from your left hand needle onto the upholstery needle, stringing them along like a drawstring.
5) Once all stitches are transferred from your knitting needles to your upholstery needle, pull the stitches tight together. (When working with a tweed or an angora, do not pull too hard, as the yarn will break). Thread the needle through to the inside of the hat and tie off securely, weaving in the ends.
6) Finishing the rib: Tuck half off the length of the ribbing at the bottom up under the hat. Turn hat inside out and sew edge of rib to top of rib using an invisible seam. This makes the ribbing at the bottom half as long and twice as thick for extra coziness around the ears.
8) Voila! Wear it out!
